In Afghanistan many girls are forbidden to ride a bike. So now they are riding skateboards instead!

In 2007 Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich visited Afghanistan. He attracted a lot of attention from children, especially girls, and set up an NGO charity called “Skateistan”.

The NGO has become so popular that skateboarding has become one of the most popular sports for women in Afghanistan.

Vocabulary: NGO= non-governmental organisation; an enterprise that helps people. It receives money from donations, not the government
